Building

The mission of the Building Division is to provide the community with a source of knowledge and expertise in the review of building plans and the inspection of building projects, insuring compliance with currently adopted code to safeguard health, safety, property and public welfare. The service that the Building Division Team provides for the community will be based on the following criteria:

  • Service will be provided to the community in a professional, helpful and polite manner.
  • Communication will be effective, precise and technically correct.
  • Review of building project plans will be quick, concise and thorough with public safety the paramount objective.
  • Problems will be resolved within the guidelines of the adopted codes to maintain safety, consistency and fairness to all members of the public.
  • Inspection of building projects will be performed in a courteous, timely and precise manner.    
  • The members of the Building Division Team will be a competent source of knowledge, education and assistance for the community in their building projects.

The Building Division team will continually strive to improve the public's satisfaction with our service, professionalism and knowledge. Community awareness and education is an important function of the Building Division and will continue to be an important part of our building permit process. 

Plans Examiners Appointments:

Appointments can be made with a plans examiner through out the week on projects or questions that will take more than 10 minutes. To schedule this, please contact the Building Inspector at (406)880-5832.


Applications

Applications can be downloaded, printed, filled out, along with the appropriate plans and documents, and brought to: Stevensville Town Hall, 206 Buck Street.

Legal description information (required for some permits) can be obtained from the Montana Cadastral System: gis.mt.gov.

Required Documentation

When making an application for a building permit, you must submit:

A complete, signed building permit application, including the legal description of the property, the owner, and contractor information:

  • Infrastructure Fee Application
  • A complete signed site plan checklist
    • Commercial:
      • Two copies of complete building plans - one can be digital
      • Two site plans
    • Residential:
      • Two copies of complete building plans - one can be digital
      • Two site plans
  • One signed Energy Compliance Certifications with checklist
  • A signed Fair Housing Acknowledgment and Certification
  • Asbestos letters (commercial remodels only)

Site Plan Checklist

The building permit application and site plan checklist must be printed and scaled to fit on 8.5" by 11"  paper in order for this office to accept and process your application. If any of this information is incomplete or missing, the application process will be stopped. These forms may also be obtained from our office.

When Building Permits are Required
